STEP Up to Leadership
Step Up To Leadership is a 12-week course offered by several Community Action Agencies to nurture leadership skills and encourage participants to make a difference in their communities through civic involvement. For many low-income clients, the course is their first opportunity to learn about characteristics of great leaders, public speaking, dealing with conflict, the art of listening and how to work well with others.
The program helps people identify how they want to contribute to their communities and teaches them techniques to turn their strengths and passions into action. Their newly acquired leadership skills can be used to promote social services within their communities and to become effective members of civic boards. Course graduates may apply for mini-grants to start or contribute to efforts that address conditions of poverty in their communities.
